Message from the Coordinator of
SAE, USA Region
33
years later, we cannot forget
The
memories of the devastating days of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus are
re-awakened at the dawning of this sad anniversary.
We
lament as we remember what was lost, a memory that forces us to keep
active the struggle for the human rights of the Cypriots and the
application of international law and justice on the entire Island Nation.
It
is our duty to work for intensified awareness of the rights of the Cypriot
people by the political and social leaders in the American society.
We
have the power and the right, as American citizens, to seek from the U.S.
government to apply pressure and to exercise its influence on Ankara so
that we may finally arrive at a permanent, just and workable solution.
We
are certain that with unity, with our eyes on the vision that we share, we
can overcome Turkish aggressiveness and indifference in order to resolve
the conflict according to the resolutions of the United Nations and the
European Union.
Fulfilling
the just aspirations of the Cypriot people for freedom from foreign
occupation is the non-negotiable position and the basic condition on which
to build friendship and economic relations with Turkey, our neighbor.
Wherever
we are, Hellenes everywhere will never forget.
For
the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) US Region,
Theodore
Spyropoulos, Coordinator
